Every condo has two main shut-off valves: one for cold water and one for hot water. These valves control the water supply to the entire unit. They are critical for managing plumbing emergencies like leaks or burst pipes.
Where to Find Them
In most condos, the main shut-off valves are located behind the drywall underneath the bathroom sink. To access them, you’ll need to remove the access panel carefully. Once removed, you’ll see the cold and hot water shut-off valves, which can be operated to stop water flow when necessary.
Why Everyone Must Know Their Location
Emergency Leaks: In case of a burst pipe, shutting off the valves quickly can prevent significant water damage to your unit and neighbouring ones.
Appliance Repairs: If a dishwasher or washing machine starts leaking, shutting off the water immediately can stop further damage while you wait for a plumber.
Regular Maintenance Is Essential
Shut-off valves should be exercised yearly to ensure they work correctly. To do this:
Turn the valves off and back on thoroughly to check for smooth operation.
Inspect for corrosion or leaks.
Contact a plumber if the valves are stiff or unresponsive.
Don’t Confuse Main and Fixture Shut-Off Valves
It’s important to distinguish between the two:
Main Shut-Off Valves: Control water supply to the entire unit (hot and cold).
Fixture Shut-Off Valves: Smaller valves near appliances and fixtures like sinks, toilets, or washing machines, controlling water to those specific features.
Understanding and maintaining your condo’s main water shut-off valves is essential for preventing costly water damage and handling plumbing emergencies effectively.
